Recklessness

Recklessness

The President is ill with Covid 19. Let us all hope he gets better. He will get the best care available, from the best doctors and nurses in a top-flight facility, and although his risk profile (male, mid 70’s and overweight) is quite bad, he will likely recover and be able to resume his presidential duties and his campaigning for re-election.

It appears he may have contracted it about a week or so ago and attended multiple events with many different people all over the country while infected, including one or more campaign fundraising events even after he had been diagnosed positive. He did not warn people at these events that he and/or his staff might be infected; he did not encourage them to wear masks or socially distance, indeed he did the exact opposite of what a good leader and thoughtful human being does in this situation.

Now he is in Walter Reed hospital and getting a variety of medications to help him ward off the virus. You don’t hospitalize people for a little flu; this is serious and could become severe.

I fully understand the marathon sprint to re-election, and all that entails. However he has helped infect and expose many of his top White House staff, three Senators, many of his top campaign aides, many campaign donors, many staff at these events, and the President of Notre Dame University due to his failure to wear a mask and to social distance and to encourage others to do likewise.

For the last 9 months, he has downplayed the virus and its severe threats to the American people. He has been playing Russian roulette with the lives and livelihoods of the American people. He feared that he would not win re-election if people knew the risks to which he has exposed our nation.

It was the same recklessness and heedlessness that caused so many of his Trump companies to go bankrupt. It was the same recklessness that entangled him with a leading porn star and with a Miss America pageant winner while his wife was pregnant and expecting to deliver their son.

Let us all hope that he gets healthy and exits the White House under his own steam and volition next January 20. There are important lessons for the President and the American people to learn; it is not too late for all of us to take all the steps needed to safeguard ourselves, our families, our friends and colleagues and ultimately the nation.

It appears as if he has been seriously ill, needing oxygen several times, having difficulty breathing and receiving a series of drug treatments for those with severe cases of Covid. However, he insisted yesterday that the Secret Service take him out on a car ride to wave to his supporters outside the hospital; the man is simply incapable of learning anything and thinking beyond his own gratification to those in the Secret Service whom he puts in danger by his actions.

Vote early, and wear your dang masks.
