Re: Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement

Dear Senators and Representatives

I write to urge you to do three things in the wake of the recent killing by an ICE agent of Renee Good, a US citizen, mother of three and legal observer in Minneapolis. First, I hope that House and Senate Oversight Hearings can be convened to examine the misconduct of ICE during the past year where multiple shootings have occurred, terrible conditions in ICE detention centers have led to deaths and disease. https://time.com/7345319/ice-shootings-renee-good/ and https://calmatters.org/commentary/2025/12/ice-health-scares-for-detained/ Second, I would urge that language be added during the upcoming appropriations process to restrict the militarization of ICE officers conducting their immigration responsibilities, and the politicization of their enforcement raids. The widespread use of heavy weaponry, body armor, masks and the lack of any identification of the ICE officers is far beyond what is necessary to enforce the nation’s immigration laws. We don’t need to have our immigrant communities in the American cities governed by Democrats turned into a set for Star Wars, but with live ammunition and dead and wounded Americans. Third, I would urge that an impeachment inquiry of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem be initiated in the House of Representatives. She has repeatedly lied to the American people and to their elected Representatives about the deceased, by all accounts a gentle soul and kind woman. She has denied Congress access to ICE detention facilities to conduct necessary oversight. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ice-facilities-homeland-security-lawmakers-visit-inspections/ Under the 10th Amendment, policing powers are reserved to the state and local governments and their own elected officials. Secretary Noem has persistently violated the constitutional separation between the distinct sovereign responsibilities of the state and federal governments by her excessive use of unnecessary force on immigrant communities, widely and vastly disturbing the domestic tranquility prescribed for us by our founding fathers.

Many thanks for your wise and seasoned leadership at this tumultuous time.

Sincerely,
